SANGIOVESE, ERA, Italy 2009

It's the New Year, and everyone's making unsustainable resolutions. In the classic consumer pattern of excess-guilt-abstinence, everyone's giving up alcohol.

There is a more sustainable and less punitive resolution - drink organic. Not only will you protect the environment by safeguarding soil fertility and biodiversity, you will feel a whole lot better the next day.

Sulphur dioxide levels are far lower in organic wine, and over 60 otherwise widely-used additives are banned in organic winemaking. And of course, noxious herbicides, pesticides and fungicides are kept out of organic vineyards.

So give up the hangover but don't give up the pleasure... a bottle of Italian red will help warm our winter blues, and this organic and vegan Sangiovese offers great value for money. With its deep, plummy fruit, and hints of liquorice and spice, it offers great value drinking with tomato-based dishes or by itself.
